Plan the work

Build a home maintenance plan that stays useful

A useful maintenance plan connects what the home contains, what you observe and what deserves attention next.

01

Create a simple home inventory

List major assemblies and equipment by area: exterior, structure, water, climate, electrical, appliances and safety devices. Record an approximate age only when you can support it with a label, receipt or prior report.

  • Item or system name
  • Location and identifying details
  • Known installation or service date
  • Manual, warranty or report location
02

Prioritize by consequence and evidence

Give priority to conditions that could affect safety, allow water entry or cause wider damage. Distinguish an observed condition from a diagnosis, and seek specialist input when the cause or remedy is uncertain.

03

Use intervals as prompts, not guarantees

Manufacturer guidance, local conditions, materials and usage all affect timing. Put a review date on the calendar, then adjust it using observations and qualified advice rather than treating a generic interval as universal.

04

Keep the plan small enough to review

A monthly glance and a deeper seasonal review are often easier to sustain than a long annual list. Reschedule unfinished tasks explicitly so they do not disappear.

  • Review overdue items
  • Add new observations
  • Close completed work with evidence
  • Choose the next three priorities

Keep the record with the task

Capture the date, observation, decision and next review point while the details are still clear.
